Refugees at universities – programmes and initiatives

The DAAD aims to nurture the potential of refugees who are capable of studying and to enable them to enrol at German universities. To this end, it is implementing various programmes and initiatives in collaboration with universities and partner organisations to support the integration of refugees into the German higher education system.

 

Many refugees have already obtained a qualification for university entry, started a degree programme or completed their studies in their home countries. To make it easier for them to access higher education in Germany, the DAAD has launched a comprehensive package of measures. Here is an overview of the key measures.

 

Education is a central component of the integration of refugees. This is because more than half of the refugees currently arriving in Germany are under 25 years of age – that is, at an age when they need an education. To enable those among them who wish to study and possess the necessary qualifications to do so, the DAAD will, with funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), support universities with targeted measures over the coming years, thereby helping to integrate refugees.

A total of around 100 million euros has been made available for this purpose since 2016. Using funding from the BMBF, the DAAD has developed a comprehensive, long-term package of measures. This package consists of three components that form the basis for successful access to higher education:

 

  • Identifying skills and qualifications
  • Ensuring readiness for higher education: academic and language preparation for university studies
  • Supporting integration at universities


The HVF also takes part in the DAAD’s support programme and backs the initiative.
 

 

 

 

The online German tuition programme, which has been running since 2016, will resume on a weekly basis from 12 September 2023 on the following dates:

 

Monday 6.00–8.00 pm in person. Building 4, Room 4.007

 

Thursday 6.30–8.30 pm in person. Building 4, Room 4.007

 

The “Refugees Welcome” project was launched at the HVF in the summer term of 2016. Since then, students at the university have regularly supported refugees, provided them with German tuition and helped them get involved in sporting and cultural activities. We would like to expand this programme further and are always looking for students – regardless of their degree programme or year of study – who would like to volunteer.

 

What we do:

 

Online / face-to-face German tuition sessions (usually weekly):
Support in small groups with 1:1 or 1:2 tuition
Current dates (subject to change each semester): 
from 12 September 2023: Monday 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm & Thursday 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm, Building 4, Room 4.007 
Other group activities (not regular)
E.g.: Group dinners, games evenings, trips to musicals, university sports sessions, an excursion to Ludwigsburg
Planned activities: Introductory course in MS Word, training in writing CVs or business letters

How to join online:

1. Install the Zoom app on your PC, laptop, mobile phone, etc.

2. Open Zoom and enter the meeting ID at 6.30 pm.

3. Please confirm the prompts that appear (usually something along the lines of ‘Join audio via computer’). 

We welcome any additional volunteers. If you are interested, please simply send us an email.

Any volunteer who has taken part in five sessions will also receive a certificate of participation.

The project is being carried out at the university in collaboration with the International Office as a DAAD-funded project in Bonn.

It is possible to have the work recognised for credit as part of the Module 8.1 specialist project.

It is also possible to have your contributions recognised as part of the Ethics Programme, which is open to all enrolled students at the universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg.

The Society for Academic Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.) – supports Ukrainian refugees with a range of learning and testing programmes as they make their way to Germany and enrol at a German university:

  • free assessment of their German language skills using the onSET
  • free assessment of their suitability for undergraduate degree programmes using the TestAS
  • TestDaF language certificate to demonstrate their German language proficiency for studying at a German university
  • German courses from Deutsch-Uni Online to prepare for studying in Germany (levels A1–C1, everyday language, specialist language, professional language, TestDaF exam preparation)

The “Refugees Welcome” project was launched in the summer term of 2016 with funding from the DAAD. Since then, student volunteers from the HVF Ludwigsburg have been supporting refugees and helping to integrate them into society and the student community. They provide German language tuition, assist with dealing with the authorities, and help integrate people into sporting and cultural activities. The project is run by the students in close collaboration with the university’s International Office. An organising team of two to four students leads the group of volunteers and provides the student volunteers with advice and practical support.

 

The project is regularly presented to a wider public, for example through articles in the university’s own magazine *Dialog* (2018, issue 38) or, as can be seen in the image below, in the *Staatsanzeiger* (2017, issue 48).
